addendum

In case anyone (besides Oliver) is trying to figure out what this is, here's a better pic. Sara? Any ideas?

Hm, that's squirm-makingly familiar. Is this a shrubby thing, tree-ish, or some third option? I do like its little chicken feet.

I know. I think Oliver was onto something with that freeze-dried chick comment. It's shrubby, about 6 feet tall, but has undoubtedly been pruned regularly.

All hail Sara Stopek, queen of plant identification, who has correctly shown the mystery shrub to be Kolwitzia amabalis (aka beautybush)! Thanks, Sara.
